Ankle joint is made up of various structures like bones, ligaments, muscles etc. that may get injured due to trauma. Trauma may result in ankle injuries like fractures, dislocation, and sprains and tears of soft tissues, like ligaments. In many cases, injuries involve more than one structure in the ankle joint.

Causes:

The most common cause of ankle injury and fracture is vehicular accident or fall from height or on hard surface. It can also occur due to blunt trauma to the ankle, such as from a car crash. Certain diseases like osteoporosis or obesity can also make bones weak causing ankle fractures. Twisting, rolling or rotating of ankle may also injure it.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of ankle fracture or injury may include any of the following:

  • Pain in the ankle
  • Swelling of the ankle
  • Bruising in or around the joint
  • Stiffness
  • Inability to move the ankle or put weight or pressure on it
  • Redness and warmth over the joint
  • Bone protruding out of the joint
  • Deformity ("out of place"), particularly if the ankle joint is dislocated as well
