STIFF AND SWOLLEN ANKLE

Swelling of the ankle joint is very common and is not a big concern if prolonged standing or walking has caused it. But if these are accompanied by other symptoms too, it may be a cause of concern. Ankle joint may become firm and swell due to accumulation of the excessive fluid in or around the joint. It may be temporary but may cause long-term discomfort if left untreated.

Causes:

Stiffness and swelling in ankle joint mainly occurs due to pregnancy complications, venous insufficiency (a condition in which blood does not adequately move up the veins from the legs and feet up to the heart), Heart, liver, or kidney disease, injury like ankle fracture, dislocation, or sprain, overuse injuries, infection or chronic, debilitating conditions like ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory bursitis, juvenile arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trochanteric bursitis, tendinitis etc. It can also occur due to side effect of certain medications.

Symptoms:

Swelling of the ankle joint causes it’s puffing up that is easily noticeable and comparable with the normal ankle. This is generally accompanied with stiffness or difficulty to do simple activities like walking, standing etc. In addition to this, ankle becomes unable to bear weight. A clicking or popping sound may be heard on moving the joint.
