Hip joint is made up of various structures like bones, ligaments, muscles etc. that may get injured due to trauma. Trauma may result in hip injuries like fractures, dislocation, and sprains and tears of soft tissues, like ligaments. In many cases, injuries involve more than one structure in the hip joint.


The most common cause of hip injury and fracture is vehicular accident or fall from height or on hard surface. It can also occur due to blunt trauma to the hip, such as from a car crash.


The symptoms of hip injury may include any of the following:

  • Pain in the hip and groin area
  • Swelling of the hip
  • Bruising in or around the joint
  • Stiffness
  • Inability to move the joint or put weight or pressure on the affected hip and leg
  • Redness and warmth over the joint
  • Bone protruding out of the joint
  • The affected leg being shorter than the unaffected leg
