Understanding Ankle Instability

Date :28-Oct-2023

Many people who are physically active are bound to sprain their ankle one or two times, maybe falling off the stairs or while playing a sporting activity. But this is something really normal as the ankle heals by itself with time. But there are situations where that is not the case. Repeated sprain can weaken the outer part of the ankle leading to ankle Instability.

Let’s understand the condition more precisely.

What is Ankle Instability?

The ankle comprises several bones, muscles, and ligaments that function together to maintain stability, restrict excessive movements, and prevent injury. When the ligaments that support the sides of the ankle are injured, typically due to repeated sprains, they become stretched and weakened, resulting in ankle instability.

Causes of Ankle Instability

Weakened ligaments around the ankle bones lead to ankle instability, also known as chronic ankle instability. Most frequently, one or more ankle sprain injuries that do not heal give rise to the condition.

Other causes are

  • Nerve injury in the ankle
  • Inflammation of the joint lining
  • Fractures in the ankle joint
  • Torn tendons, which are fibers that connect the muscles to the bones
  • Arthritis in the ankle joint
  • Scar tissue that puts a sprain on the ligament.

Symptoms of Ankle Instability

  • Unusual discomfort or swelling
  • Instability or wobbliness in the ankle
  • Frequent rolling of the ankle on the outer side.

Treatment for Ankle Instability

Initially your healthcare provider would opt for non-surgical options like wearing a brace, taking anti-inflammatory medication, or undergoing physical therapy.

Physical Therapy: Strengthening exercises and balance training can help improve ankle stability.

Bracing or Taping: Some patients benefit from ankle braces or taping techniques to support the joint.

Medications: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help manage pain and inflammation.

Surgery: In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair or reconstruct damaged ligaments.
